Max Blokzijl was a publicist for the national socialists in occupied the Netherlands. He had a weekly radio talk and he was also the head of the media department of the ministry of Public Education and Arts. After the war he was tried and convicted for collaborating. He was executed in 1946.
The museum Meermanno (Museum of the Book) organised a exhibition of books that are now taboo. Main themes: depiction of black people, books that seek to convert people to christianity, especially Jews and people in the colonies, nazi books, stereotypical gender roles. More info:

I say nothing – you know John – I dare not contradict you
Tell him they will open the Scheldt and he shall fight Dam him.

German satirical weekly, very popular with those who make history exams. Very often you would find a cartoon from Simplicissimus in an exam which you had to explain and discuss.
This issue of Simplicissimus can be read in its entirety by going to this page: swk-web1.weimar-klassik.de/simplicissimus/05/ and selecting 05 11.pdf there
Fritz Behrendt died today

Behrendt was a political cartoonist. He was born in Germany in 1925. His parents fled to Holland in 1937 to escape the nazi regime. After the war he was a socialist, but six months in a East-German prison cured him of that. His drawings were always on the hand of the victim. He prefered falable democracy over dictatorships and didn't like fashionable "freedom fighters" and their progressive supporters in the west.
He was published the world over.
This is a drawing made in 1967. The caption reads "Grandfather was defenceless". It is part of a publication called "Mensen" (People), which is in my library.
