Iron Bridge

03 Jun 2013 2 163
A graceful footbridge spanning Debdon Burn on the Cragside Estate. Known as the Iron Bridge, it is almost certainly of steel and thus one of the first of its kind in the country. The main span measures 64ft, flanked by half-spans, and its arch is echoed by curved bracing in the wide open spandrels. This structure bears a timber footway at a height of 35ft, between open iron parapets. The whole sits lightly on half-height brick piers well hidden by foliage. Built between 1870 and 1875. Cragside, Northumberland, England.
