'Tommy'

25 Nov 2014 1 2 414
The sculpture depicts a weary British 'Tommy' of World War One reflecting on the war just a minute after peace was declared. Entitled 1101, owing to the fact the armistice went into effect at 11am on November 11, 1918, it stands 2.87 metres tall and weighs 1.2 tonnes. Created by local artist Ray Lonsdale, the sculpture is also intended to represent Post Traumatic Stress Disorder which many of the returning soldiers endured. Built out of special corteen steel, it has been installed on Seaham seafront in County Durham to mark the centenary of the start of the Great War.

Work on the sculpture started in July 1997 and it was assembled on site seven months later in February 1998. The Angel was fabricated from 200 tonnes of weathering steel and is 20 metres tall with a wing span of 54 metres, almost as big as a jumbo jet.
