Built in 1844 in memory of John Lambton, the first Earl of Durham. It is an adaptation of the Theseum, a Greek temple in Athens. John Lambton was Governor General of Canada from 1792 to 1840, was a prominent land owner and was involved in the 1832 Reform Act which extended the vote to a much larger section of the population.

Penshaw Monument is a folly built in 1844 on Penshaw Hill between Washington and Houghton-le-Spring, within the City of Sunderland, North East England. It is dedicated to John George Lambton, first Earl of Durham and the first Governor of the Province of Canada. Wearside, October 2002.
