Pandemic chalk: Halloween Cat Lady

For October 2024 (our fifth Halloween during covid), our front walk features a chalk drawing based on the Bride of Frankenstein as portrayed by Elsa Lanchester in the 1930s. This version has a stunned looking cat (I'm not good at drawing cats). And spider webs. And lightning bolts. and might get some other crawly creepy additions before the big day.

For October 2023, our sidewalk featured a haunted portrait--the faces kept changing every few days! :)

For October 2020 our chalk walk was Halloween-themed. I started with a vortex, and a 3D jack-o-lantern.

For October 2020 our chalk walk was Halloween-themed. The Bride looked bored, so I gave her a crochet hook and she made a garland of candy corn.

For October 2020 our chalk walk was Halloween-themed. I didn't wash away the RBG from September, so she lingered in the background.

Tree Headpiece, continued

Still working on the crocheted tree costume for Halloween. The headpiece has more felted-wool leaves now, and is wired for more support. Need to move on to the tunic/trunk component soon, but I'll still be adding more felted leaves and maybe some other features to the headpiece, as the costume develops.
This is probably the last photo of it that I can take with the webcam--it's growing too big!
Owl headpiece, on kid

We're making an owl costume. This is the headpiece (so far--it may still grow further). Shiny yarns are a bit of a safety feature for night-time trick-or-treating.
Scottish Bagpiper Costume
20 Oct 2010 |
|
|
Daughter's costume this year was inspired by our trip to Scotland in August. We saw a parade with a lot of pipe bands, in a town Robert Burns knew well.
I made: The bagpipes, the sporran, and the sock tabs. The pipes and sporran are made from a very old remnant of herringbone wool, plus a cut up t-shirt and some craft felt, and some wooden dowels, and some fiber fill, and an old pin. I crocheted the belt that holds the sporran on. The sock tabs are just bits of craft felt sewn onto loops of elastic.
The hat and vest were in my closet; the kilt and blouse were gifts from grandmother; the shoes and socks we bought (but they're perfectly usable for other purposes).
The bagpipes are somewhat 'functional' because I made a channel to insert an alto recorder, which she can play in its disguised form. ;)

The 4th grade teachers

The teachers at our school do matching costumes by grade--so the first grade teachers might all dress as pencils, for example. The 4th grade teachers were Cat-in-the-Hat, Thing One, and Thing Two, this year.
Waiting their turn

My daughter the snail and her classmates wait their turn at the Halloween Parade at school this morning. Note duct-tape "slime" on the front of her snail costume.
