Painted and collaged pins, featuring Florence Bascom (1862-1945), geologist. In 1893 Bascom receive a PhD from Johns Hopkins University--the first woman allowed to do so. (She was the second woman to earn a PhD in geology, after Mary Holmes at Michigan.) She was also the first woman hired by the US Geological Survey (in 1896), and a professor at Bryn Mawr. The image is of neuroanatomist Elizabeth Caroline Crosby (1888-1983), first woman to achieve full professor status at the University of Michigan's medical school. My mother-in-law says this was probably a friend of her mother's--so it might be in Philadelphia, or a woman from Philadelphia, 1930s or 1940s.
