Suffragette Costume (in progress)

07 Oct 2008 877
Made my sash for my Halloween costume--I'm a 1912-era suffragette (dressed all in white, as many did for parades and demonstrations). I'm still working on the hat and a protest sign demanding passage of the 19th Amendment...\ This costume was partly inspired by the Library of Congress Flickr Commons project, which uploads 50 news photos from 1910-1915 every Friday--I'm addicted, look forward to seeing what new treasures will appear every Friday. Many feature suffrage demonstrations and events, but others are sports related, or coverage of famous trials, or newsmakers visiting New York, or natural disasters... you name it. Check it out!

Suffragette Costume

Recycling the accessories from my Halloween costume last year, for "historical figures" day at school today. Turned out, her teacher also dressed as a suffragette! We spent our walk to school talking about the suffrage movement, and how there are still places where women can't vote yet. Teachable moments. Sign and sash are homemade. Sash is three lengths of ribbon assembled with lots of masking tape as backing, and iron-on letters.

Happy Halloween!

My finished homemade suffragette costume. I'm going to wear it all day, wherever I go, and then out to trick-or-treat with the kids tonight .
