Daly's Wharf - 28 February 2015

06 Aug 2015 129
Daly's Wharf (also Daly's Pier) is the original town pier for Akaroa and is about 150 years old. Most commerce in the modern era now takes place at the Town Wharf a little further south. Daly's Wharf is used by pedestrians and fishermen and the little building at the end is a ticket office for a tourist boat. 200_2_P1030897

Statue of Charles Meryon by Don Paterson, Rue Lavaud (Place de la Poste), Akaroa. Charles Meryon was a 19th century artist and engraver whose later work reflected his stay in New Zealand as a lieutenant aboard the French naval escort ship 'Le Rhin' [1843-46]. Akaroa has the distinction of having been the only French settlement in New Zealand. 200_2_P1030884

Akaroa Service Centre - 28 February 2015

05 Aug 2015 111
The reason we were in Akaroa was because cruise ships were not able to call at Lyttelton for Christchurch following damage to the port (and a wide area including Akaroa itself) caused by the 2011 earthquake. This, in turn, followed a 2010 earthquake which had also damaged the port town. Evidence of the continuing repair programme was to be seen at the Akaroa Service Centre which is housed in The Old Post Office (1914). I should say that to go to Akaroa was a strange kind of good fortune as it is extraordinarily beautiful as is so very much of New Zealand. I had limited expectations of my five destinations in the country but now I have firm intentions of going back. 200_2_P1030885

The Geese of Akaroa (6) - 28 February 2015

22 Jun 2015 144
I like geese and I look forward to seeing new birds when I travel so I was a bit deflated when the geese I saw grazing on and paddling towards the shore at Akaroa were Canada Geese. The Canada Goose is an introduced species on New Zealand's South Island and is there in large numbers. 200_2_P1030875C
