This rather splendid sign, featuring the Royal Albert Bridge, is on the up platform at Saltash station so perhaps it is meant to be read from trains arriving on the down side as Saltash is the last station visited in Cornwall before setting off across the River Tamar to Plymouth and Devon. The sign still bears the First Great Western branding although many of the trains are now in the more recent Great Western Railway colours.

The Royal Albert Bridge, completed in 1859, is one of the great sights of south west England and one of the great engineering feats of the 19th century. Carrying trains to and from Plymouth across the River Tamar, it is best seen from Saltash, especially its station (as here). A reproduction of one of the contract drawings is displayed on the down side platform. Isambard Kingdom Brunel was too ill to attend the opening of the bridge by Prince Albert on 2 May 1959 and died later that year. The words 'I.K.Brunel Engineer 1859' appear above both portals having been added after his death.
The 19th century engineering masterpiece stands alongside the Tamar Bridge, completed more than 100 years later in 1961. I wonder if the newer structure will achieve the longevity of its neighbour?

GWR Class 150 dmu 150104, still in First Great Western Colours, arriving at Saltash with the on time 1252 to Penzance (0955 from Bristol Temple Meads).
This was a very well patronised train even before several passengers joined at Saltash and a simple glance at the arriving two-car unit underlined the need for better formations on long routes. This train had already travelled for nearly three hours and would reach Penzance in over an hour and a half more. Passengers deserve a level of comfort greater than that afforded by a two-car dmu.
