The Portsmouth harbour skyline is dominated by the Emirates Spinnaker Tower which received its branding in the summer of 2015. No.1 Gunwharf Quays also features in the backdrop to a picture which features the Wightlink ferry 'St Faith'.

A controversy raged briefly when the original plans were announced to paint the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, now the Emirates Spinnaker Tower, red . In a town of surprisingly loyal support for its rather erratic football team, many thought that red and white would be too evocative of nearby deadly rivals, Southampton. The red paint was actually procured but, in the face of the protests, had to be disposed of and was given to a number of organisations who, for various reasons, needed red paint.
The lower part of the main structure is now blue with, I believe, gold yet to be added above. I was surprised to see that all the branding at and around the base, which could be described as 'prominent' is, nonetheless, in red.

The world does not really need more pictures of the Spinnaker Tower, now the Emirates Spinnaker Tower, so today I am posting another five. Those are, in fact, to mark the 2015 decoration of the tower for its new sponsor.

Across Stoke Lake - 25 May 2015
25 May 2015 |
|
A walk to explore disused railways (pictures to follow) in Gosport gave rise to more diverse opportunities for photography. Gosport is pretty dire in many places but surprising in others. A long inlet from Portsmouth Harbour is nominally divided into a series of lakes although the water is, evidently, tidal. This view, at low tide, is from the former trackbed of the long-closed Stokes Bay branch across Stoke Lake towards the familiar Portsmouth landmarks of the Spinnaker Tower and 1 Gunwharf Quays.

The now extensive development of Gunwharf Quays occupies the former site of HMS Vernon and there are some interesting relics of the naval base amongst the residential and commercial property. This view towards Anson Court features the original South gate which frames the Spinnaker Tower.
