The Vineyards, Tewkesbury - 19 September 2017

Records of mediaeval battles are often vague or inaccurate and the exact details of the Battle of Tewkesbury (4 May 1471) are not known for certain. However, that battle took place in meadows to the south of Tewkesbury Abbey and the River Swilgate and today's Vineyards are known to be part of that area. On the so-called battle monument, only one of the four plaques (seen here on the right) actually commemorates the battle. Three others record other matters of historical note. 200_3_P1030326

Tewkesbury Abbey (1) - 15 September 2017

Although I have no religious beliefs or affiliation, I have found in my travels that much ecclesiastical architecture is very beautiful. My continuing reading of mediaeval history adds even greater interest to a visit to a place with such a long history. The present day Tewkesbury Abbey has its origins in the early 12th century and is now, in fact, a parish church. My main interest is its role in the Wars of the Roses. The Battle of Tewkesbury was fought nearby on 4 May 1471. 200_3_P1030055SC

Tewkesbury Abbey (Organists) - 15 September 2017

A simple but fascinating sight in Tewkesbury Abbey. There have been only 19 organists in 280 years. The Abbey has three organs including the Milton Organ and, I believe, only the leading organist is listed here. Wikipedia lists Simon Bell as an organist and the above mentioned Carleton Etherington as organist and Director of Music. 200_3_P1030056

Tub - 15 September 2017

Just about as random as it gets. On my wanderings to capture my more usual subjects such as ambulances and Chinese restaurants, I came across a planted tub with two small scarecrows at the corner of Nelson Street and East Street in Tewkesbury. 200_3_P1030053
