There But Not There (12) - 2 November 2018

04 Nov 2018 90
There But Not There is a nationwide initiative by the charity Remember in 2018, the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. In addition to the the Standing Tommies depicted earlier in my photostream, figures were made specifically to commemorate individuals named on local war memorials and to be displayed on benches or chairs. These are two figures of the five displayed in St Faiths Church, Lee on Solent and commemorate (l) Sergeant Percy Luff and (r) Gunner Hedley Newman. 200_3_P1080519R_M

In addition to the the Standing Tommies depicted earlier in my photostream, figures were made specifically to commemorate individuals named on local war memorials and to be displayed on benches or chairs. This example, outside 124 High Street, Lee on Solent, commemorates Captain/Acting Lieutenant Colonel A E E Lowry who won the Military Cross and DSO before being killed at the age of 25 only 18 days before the end of the war. The literature placed on the bench additionally references further figures situated at the nearby St Faiths Church. 200_3_P1080516E

The Standing Tommies are appearing across Great Britain as part of a charity initiative by Remembered called 'There But Not There'. Made from varying materials they are simple but moving. This example is in, appropriately, Lee on Solent Memorial Garden. 200_3_P1080232E

War and Peace - 10 October 2018

The Standing Tommies are appearing across Great Britain as part of a charity initiative by Remembered called 'There But Not There'. Made from varying materials they are simple but moving. An example is in a doorway at, appropriately, Gosport War Memorial Hospital which built as a memorial to members of the Portsmouth Division of the Royal Marine Light Infantry based at Forton Barracks who had died in the First World War. After considerable thought, I liked the lighting and, as I have done on a few previous occasions, I have sought to turn one piece of art into another. The light and shadow are part of the message. I was very impressed with the Standing Tommies in Perspex® (clear acrylic) which were at St Pancras station as part of a nationwide charity initiative by Remembered called 'There But Not There', remembering the soldiers of World War I. In this picture, I have applied a heavy edit in order to heighten even further the ghostly effect achieved by the figures. 200_3_P1070905XM_E
