During my visit to Ireland Park, Toronto and close to the haunting Rowan Gillespie statues of Irish immigrants there, I came across the puzzling sight of a pair of sandals, abandoned but not visibly damaged. In a moment of startling resonance, I was reminded that I have been to other places where haunting images are accompanied by abandoned footwear.
