Tewkesbury Abbey (3) - 19 September 2017

01 Oct 2017 80
Although I have no religious beliefs or affiliation, I have found in my travels that much ecclesiastical architecture is very beautiful. My continuing reading of mediaeval history adds even greater interest to a visit to a place with such a long history. The present day Tewkesbury Abbey has its origins in the early 12th century and is now, in fact, a parish church. My main interest is its role in the Wars of the Roses. The Battle of Tewkesbury was fought nearby on 4 May 1471. Here, the very beautiful Abbey is seen from part of the site of the battlefield and the light falls on the one plaque of four on the so-called battlefield monument which specifically refers to the battle. Three other plaques record other local events of historic note. 200_3_P1030328R
