Nice Gare du Sud, l'avenir - 22 Avril 2017

Linking my earlier photographs of the train shed and the station building, this poster, on rue Alfred Binet, illustrates beautifully the completed development of the site which was, after the closure of the station and for some years, a surface car park. Construction is well advanced and an underground car park is a fine example of its kind. The poster image features the cathedral-like presence within the development of the restored Eiffel train shed and I shall certainly return with some joy to see the realisation of this urban vision. Nice Gare du Sud - 22 April 2017

If I thought that the train shed of Nice Gare du Sud was uplifting then I was positively emotional about the station building itself. I had plenty of time to look at it on a well-paced Saturday lunchtime. Unfortunately, its location and size do not lend themselves to great photographs and potential views were blocked by the busy market in Place du Général de Gaulle. This rather oblique view is one of the least obstructed and captures something of the architectural magnificence now being preserved as part of the Gare du Sud development.
