AgustaWestland AW189 G-MCGO at Solent Airport. On this visit, I had hoped to see one of the other Coastguard machines which rotate through and I was not going to post this picture but, when I saw it out of the camera, I liked it. 5300_DSC_1749CE

During a very late and unplanned visit to Solent Airport to try to get an apron shot, I saw the departure of one of the stalwart Coastguard AW189s, G-MCGO. With the light already very low on a December afternoon, I felt I had nothing to lose by taking a shot and managed to get the rotor blur which can sometimes be elusive in daytime shots (if you don't plan your settings). I am fairly pleased with the result. 200_3_P1120037CE

The cone garden at Solent Airport, unattractive in photographs, punctuates this group photograph taken primarily to capture Luscombe 8F Silvaire G-BRDJ before I could frame a better shot. Also in the shot are resident American AA-5 Traveller G-AZVG and two Coastguard AW189 helicopters, G-MCGO (l) and G-MCGP. 200_3_P1080472CE

The Bristow operated Coastguard AW189 helicopters are a familiar sight at Solent Airport and, therefore, well documented but, one day, they will join their predecessors as a former generation of such helicopters. That is reason enough to ensure that every machine is thoroughly recorded. Here, G-MCGO is seen departing on an early afternoon sortie. 200_3_P1060177C

This is my first photograph of HM Coastguard AgustaWestland AW189 G-MCGO at Solent Airport where, I believe, it is still on trial. On a Sunday lunchtime, it was airborne and practicing with a small load on a cable. 200_2_P1140813CE
