Sunday 11 March 2018 saw no fewer than seven cruise ships at Port Everglades. My previous efforts with port photography had left me rather subject weary and the lighting conditions - into sun for much of the day - discouraged me from attempting a group shot or any photography from the 17th Street bridge. Instead, I waited patiently for the evening's departures. The fifth ship to leave was Crown Princess which had occupied berth 19 before sailing for Eleuthera. 200_3_P1050026CE

Part of the evening exodus from Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale. Most ships head generally south from the port to Caribbean destinations or beyond. A few head north or towards the Bahamas. On this day, Celebrity Summit led, under way to Falmouth Jamaica. Carnival Conquest followed, headed for the much nearer Eleuthera and Crown Princess brought up the rear on her way to Basseterre. 200_3_P1040635CE

As cruise ships leave Port Everglades, their passengers have splendid sunlit views of the many desirable coastal properties. The views from those properties could be described as equally splendid. It certainly is quite moving the watch the departures of the many ships to varied locations. On this occasion Crown Princess, destined for Princess Cay, was the second of six. 200_P1000482C

I continue to try to provide a mixture of documentary images - ships frequently change identities and areas of operation - and others with more compositional merit. Weekends are busy at Port Everglades with six ships on both days on the last weekend of January 2014. In this view, Crown Princess slips away towards Princess Cay past Carnival Freedom which will be the next to depart for St. Thomas. 200_P1000460

Cruise ships feature widely in my photos. My rather challenging ambition is to photograph every ship in each port it visits. I am unlikely to achieve that but it is helped by my own travels. Many of the pictures will be documentary but I hope too to bring a little variety of composition to the subject(s). In this weekend view at Port Everglades, Crown Princess is under way to Princess Cay, Bahamas and will soon be followed by Carnival Freedom which was destined for St. Thomas. 200_P1000468

Winter weekends are busy at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. Saturday 25 January 2014 saw six cruise ships in port and their departures were accompanied by warm evening sun and a host of small craft as well as Sheriff's and Coast Guard vessels. In this busy view, Crown Princess, which was the second ship to depart, leaves for Princess Cay, Bahamas. It would be followed later by Celebrity Eclipse (left) en route to Orangestad and RCCL Oasis of the Seas (right) to Nassau. 200_P1000465

It is more difficult for me these days to see 'new' ships at Southampton as I continue my quest to see as many cruise ships as possible in as many ports as possible. I last saw RCCL Adventure of the Seas at St Maarten. Today she had arrived from Lisbon and would depart for Ålesund. A middle of the day shot means the inclusion of the inevitable bunker vessel Whitonia. In the background, at Mayflower, is Crown Princess which arrived in the morning from Stavanger and would depart for Zeebrugge. X20_DSCF1959C
