Surrender to Surveillance - 1 August 2016

Every now and then, I am inspired by a piece of art to create a work of my own. Here I have taken the 1956 bronze sculpture 'Sarastus' ('Daybreak') by Wäinö Aaltonen which can be seen at Rauhankatu 19, Helsinki and, noting the striking juxtaposition of the security camera, created a comment on our society. The original work depicts "a beautiful young woman admiring the rising sun, protecting her eyes from its blinding rays". In my mind, the camera looks not unlike a gun and the posture of the figure typical of surrender - to the inevitability of surveillance today. 200_2_P1120130E
