'Mały Powstaniec' ['The Little Insurgent'] by Jerzy Jarnuszkiewicz (original design 1946). The most profoundly moving moments of my first visit to Poland were spent at this commemorative sculpture on ul. Podwale in Warsaw. The sophisticated simplicity of the piece which represents the child soldiers who fought in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, a particularly savage episode in a worldwide tragedy, starkly and searingly evokes the desperation and savagery of the times. I felt that this awkwardly lit scene in the vivid light of an autumn afternoon, evoked also the memory of an impossibly brave figure in the flames of the murdered city. 200_2_P1060744
