Citroën DS21 - 15 January 2019

Citroën DS21 (1968) In the Design section of the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich are a small number of cars displayed primarily as examples of design rather than automobile history/technology. The design of this Citroën DS21, one of my boyhood favourites, is attributed to Flaminio Bertoni (1903-1964) - the original model being, of course, the DS19. 200_3_P1090451CE

A Ribbon Runs Through It - 15 January 2019

VW Käfer Typ 11/VW Beetle Type 11 (1946) This unusual view of a Volkswagen Beetle can be seen in the Design section of the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. A small number of cars are displayed there primarily as examples of design rather than automobile history/technology. This Beetle appears to have been painted in matt overall perhaps to emphasise its form. In the museum, this Beetle is attributed to Ferdinand Anton Ernst (Ferry) Porsche (1909-1998). The original Beetle was designed by his father, Ferdinand Porsche, although Ferry was part of the engineering team. I imagine this 1946 model was developed by Ferry as his father was in prison after WWII. 200_3_P1090446R

Tatra 87 - 15 January 2019

Tatra 87 (1937) In the Design section of the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich are a small number of cars displayed primarily as examples of design rather than automobile history/technology. I have seen Tatras before - indeed there was one on my earlier visit to the Deutsches Museum Verkehrszentrum - and they are, frankly, jaw-dropping. The extraordinarily avant-garde design is even more evident in a front view dominated by a startling third headlight on the centreline. The design is attributed to Hans Ledwinka (1878-1967). 200_3_P1090452CE

NSU Ro 80 - 15 January 2019

NSU Ro 80 (1963/67) After visiting the Deutsches Museum Verkehrszentrum in Munich, I went on to the Pinakothek der Moderne. A small number of cars are displayed in the Design section there primarily as examples of design rather than automobile history/technology. To my delight, one of those is the second NSU Ro 80 I saw on the day. It is attributed to Claus Luthe (1932-2008). 200_3_P1090450CE

A Glimpse Into the Mind of the Artist - 15 January…

19 Jan 2019 129
A moment that had to be captured in the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich. As I moved between rooms a guardian paused in a doorway seemingly under the gaze of one of the characters in the rather unsettling work of Jonathan Meese. 'Die Irrfahrten des Meese' occupies an entire room at the gallery. 200_3_P1090462E
