Stadtpark Station - 23 August 2017

The Otto Wagner architecture designed for the erstwhile Stadtbahn happily survives in many places and is at its most pleasing at the wonderful Stadtpark station on line U4 of the U-Bahn. I had attempted some night shots which turned out somewhere between disappointing and embarrassing so I was pleased to capture this daytime shot between trains when the entrance was briefly deserted. I previously described the Stadtbahn architecture as 'poised delicately between ornate and simple' and I think this is clearly exemplified here. 200_3_P1020787CE

Otto Wagner Schützenhaus (3) - 23 August 2017

One of the adventures which unfolded in Vienna was, as previously reported in my photostream, my discovery of the architecture of Otto Wagner. We had seen this restaurant on an earlier bus tour and returned on a walk along the Donaukanal to get photographs. The prolific graffiti is decoration or distraction as you wish but my heart leapt when my post-holiday research revealed the main subject of this picture, the restaurant, to be the Otto Wagner Schützenhaus. 200_3_P1020773R

Otto Wagner Pavilion (4) - 23 August 2017

One of the greatest joys of my most recent visit to Vienna was to discover and learn more about the works of Otto Wagner. Prominent amongst these were the stations of the Stadtbahn which are very beautiful, poised delicately as they are between the ornate and the simple. The Stadtbahn was absorbed into the U-Bahn and, in parts, the S-Bahn but many of the station buildings survive although only Stadtpark is near-original at platform level. The Otto Wagner Pavilion at Karlsplatz (1898) consists of two identical original station buildings facing each other. The west pavilion contains a permanent exhibition on the works of Otto Wagner presented by Wien Museum. The buildings are in a slightly different, more elevated, location than in the past and were, incredibly, under threat when the U-Bahn station complex was redeveloped. The east pavilion (seen here) is now a cafe. 200_3_P1020750E

The exhibition is fascinating and the building, seen here in near-ideal light, is undeniably beautiful. 200_3_P1020741CE

The intrusion of a crane into this shot seems a worthwhile price to pay for a slightly unusual view of this beautiful building. 200_3_P1020730R
