Lady Wimborne Bridge (7) - 1 September 2014

A short internet journey and a long walk ended at what I consider to be one of the most wonderful railway relics in the UK. Only 24 hours earlier I had not heard of the Lady Wimborne Bridge but when I was doing my research on the Southampton and Dorchester Railway I saw a picture. The bridge was opened in 1876 to carry the railway over the driveway to the then Canford House (now Canford School). The last train ran over it as recently as 1976. Pictures hardly do justice to the magnificent structure and my heart was full of joy to see it for myself. This plinth should bear an informative plaque which I would like to have seen. I understand it was stolen because it was metal.
Geotagging would more accurately say Oakley or Wimborne or Merley.

The inner fence is a relatively recent addition.
