It was not until late morning that a second cruise ship approached St. Maarten on this Sunday. Costa Pacifica was arriving from Pointe-à-Pitre and and would depart later for La Romana, Dominican Republic. 200_3_P1100564

Air Lekkerbek Demise (8) - 17 March 2019

04 Apr 2019 2 208
A walk from the cruise port to downtown Philipsburg was rewarded by the completely unexpected sight, in a scrapyard, of the former Air Lekkerbek Bar & Restaurant. The NAMC YS-11-111 was originally delivered to All Nippon Airways and withdrawn as PJ-WIK by Winair at SXM before becoming a well-known restaurant feature in Philipsburg where it was well into 2018 although it might have stopped functioning as a restaurant some while before then. The aircraft was painted in Heineken green. There are multiple and not particularly coherent threads to be viewed on the demise of the restaurant and some of the views appear controversial. Whatever the facts, the aircraft body was at the scrapyard by 17 March 2019 and, I think, actual scrapping had commenced. 200_3_P1100539

Viking Sea at Philipsburg (4) - 17 March 2019

04 Apr 2019 70
The cruise port at Philipsburg, St. Maarten was much quieter than on my two previous visits. The area in the foreground of this picture can be very busy when up to six ships are visiting. Viking Sea was alone for more another hour after this late morning photograph was taken. Costa Pacifica arrived at lunchtime. The Viking vessel herself had arrived from Antigua and would depart for Charlotte Amalie, the last port before returning to Puerto Rico. 200_3_P1100545CE

Take A Seat (2) - 17 March 2019

Even for a frail being who has left behind an uncompleted winter, it is worth bearing the high temperatures of the Caribbean islands by walking to see what one might see. Like this. Probably unrelated but now equally famous. This piece of ground is near the port of Philipsburg. 200_3_P1100541

Yoda Guy - 17 March 2019

03 Apr 2019 42
The punnily named Yoda Guy Movie Exhibit in the slightly improbable location of Philipsburg, St. Maarten. The property at 19A Front Street appears to be Moorish in style; I can not speak to whether the contents are moreish or not but it does appear to be favourably reviewed. 200_3_P1100494

Mystery Tram (2) - 17 March 2019

03 Apr 2019 151
This is one of two related photographs which have left me baffled and frustrated. The preserved tramcar is in the courtyard of an establishment named Amasterdam (sic), the spelling of which can clearly be seen, and might be presumed to be a refugee from the near-eponymous city. Although I have stood in that very courtyard, I can find absolutely no information about an establishment of that name (just off Front Street in Philipsburg) nor about a preserved tram in Philipsburg or, indeed, St. Maarten. 200_3_P1100499
