This section of the museum records the 'death marches' instigated by the desperate Germans as the end of the war approached. Not wanting prisoners to be found alive in the camps, they evacuated them in appalling winter conditions with minimal food and clothing. Those who were unable to keep up were shot. The picture in this photograph is the dramatic and moving 'The Death March' by Israel Alfred Glück. Glück was an Auschwitz survivor who was sent on a death march to, ultimately, Buchenwald. He survived to reach Bergen-Belsen, then a Displaced Persons (DP) camp, and, later, emigrate to Israel where he died in 2007. 200_P1030268M
