43147 approaching Newport - 3 June 2016

It will undoubtedly be some while before Great Western Railway colours are applied across the fleet. In the meantime, the more familiar First Great Western scheme remains dominant and is seen here on Class 43 43147 'Royal Marines Celebrating 350 years' as it approaches Newport. 200_2_P1100883

Passing West Drayton - 7 June 2015

With evidence of Crossrail development all around, Paddington bound First Great Western Class 43 HST 43088 passes West Drayton on a Sunday afternoon. 200_2_P1050262

First Great Western Class 165 dmu 165117 pulls away from West Drayton with a mid-afternoon service for Paddington. There is much evidence of the rather faded station's transformation for Crossrail. 200_2_P1050254

Between the Posts - 7 June 2015

When recording the rail scene of today, much of what we see is, frankly, mundane so we sometimes have to try to record it interestingly. I am not and never will be in the league of Jim Knight, Gordon Edgar or Phil Sangwell all of whom excel at railway photography but I am pleased with today's shot of First Great Western Class 43 HST 43163 passing West Drayton at speed and wearing a promotional livery for Plymouth. I had about four seconds to plan the shot and did not use burst shooting. This single shot is SOOC except for straightening. 200_2_P1050261

159105 leaving Warminster - 21 August 2014

23 Aug 2014 1 155
This hurried shot of South West Trains Class 159 dmu 159105 leaving Warminster became necessary after I failed to frame the arrival properly. The unit formed the late running 1336 to Brighton (originating at Great Malvern) which is, in fact, a First Great Western service. I understand that loans are taking place during the fitting of accessible toilets to some units. 200_P1050241

Yeovil Pen Mill (5) - 22 July 2014

23 Jul 2014 1 188
First Great Western Class 150 150124 departs Yeovil Pen Mill with the 1556 to Gloucester (1508 from Weymouth). This photograph is very definitely inspired by Jim Knight whose consistently excellent work on Flickr reminds us that, whilst it is fairly easy to document our railways, it is much harder to do so interestingly and with originality. Jim has helped me to think more about composition and, where possible, planning a shot. 200_P1040878

150265 at Falmouth Docks - 13 April 2014

18 Apr 2014 2 172
I rather like branch lines but am less than enchanted with the 2-car dmus which serve so many of them. Nevertheless, they are an inescapable part of today's railway scene and deserve to be recorded for posterity. In this shot, First Great Western Class 150 150265 stands at Falmouth Docks with the 1614 departure to Truro. 200_P1020251

In this shot, First Great Western Class 150 150265 is approaching Falmouth Docks with the 1600 arrival (1535 from Truro). The flare is caused by being very contre-jour at the time of day. 200_P1020245C
