A Farewell To Otago (3) - 1 March 2015

Harington Point Lighthouse The New Zealand part of our cruise ended with departure from Port Chalmers for Melbourne. There could have been no better reminder of the beauty of the country than the coastal scenery as we made our way out to open sea. 200_2_P1040044

An Otago Dawn (5) - 1 March 2015

16 Aug 2015 109
Many cruise port calls start at early in the day and the effort of going on deck perhaps even before breakfast is frequently rewarded by beautiful sights in light only the dawn can bring. The approach to Port Chalmers in New Zealand's South Island provided such sights and I have tried to do them some justice in a few pictures. Geotagging approximate TZ30_P1020684C

Lumber - 1 March 2015

This early morning scene at Port Chalmers, with the first sunlight falling on the quay, underlines the importance to the port of the lumber trade. TZ30_P1020688

Port Chalmers - 1 March 2015

15 Aug 2015 114
Even the harshness of a port did little to diminish the beauty of South Island scenery as we arrived at Port Chalmers early on a Sunday morning. The Iona Presbyterian Church dominates the town view. TZ30_P1020685

A Tender Moment - 28 February 2015

20 Jun 2015 136
In the world of cruise ships, tendering, often using the ship's lifeboats is a common way of providing passenger access to destinations without suitable berths. As the Holland America Oosterdam was anchored in the deep water of Akaroa Harbour, its tenders shuttled back and forth to the town. The area on New Zealand's South Island is absolutely beautiful. 200_2_P1030848

Across Akaroa Harbour (3) - 28 February 2015

20 Jun 2015 119
On a cruise which introduced me to New Zealand, I experienced more joy than I had anticipated. My first taste of South Island was at Akaroa which is one of the most beautiful of the many places I have seen in the world. Following the 2011 earthquake in Lyttleton (Christchurch), cruise ships stop here instead of further north. This beautiful scene is on the west side of Akaroa Harbour.
