As Good As It Gets - 19 June 2021
20 Jun 2021 |

Photographic opportunities at Kings Cross were already limited and are now even more so with Covid restrictions in place. Add in the clutter of infrastructure when viewed from an elevated position on York Way, and this is about as good as it gets.
LNER Class 800 Azuma 800108 is seen with an unidentified Grand Central Class 180 Adelante.

55011 at Kings Cross - 17 June 1981

As restrictions continue and we crawl on hands and knees towards various milestones, I have turned again to my archive. On previous occasions, I decided not to scan certain pictures because of quality, composition or lack of accompanying information. Over recent years, I have improved my editing techniques (you might not agree) and I can better recover some of my older images even if the composition is not always what I would accept today.
The mighty Deltics, which were at the heart of Kings Cross before it had the soul sucked from it, were in the last year of their operational lives when I photographed 55011 'The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers' at the London terminus. This locomotive was withdrawn later in 1981.

DVT 82205 at Kings Cross (1) - 28 July 2019

This is a 'last chance to see' sort of photograph. DVT 82205, seen here at Kings Cross, (and Class 91 locomotive 91101) were revinyled in 2015 to mark the then latest incarnation of the famous Flying Scotsman service. The LNER titles have since replaced those of predecessor Virgin.
The service runs southbound with one stop only, at Newcastle, and there is no northbound equivalent. LNER's Azuma units took over the service on 1 August 2019.

A wonderful relic (perhaps a reproduction?) of the former use of Coal Drop Yards at Kings Cross which is now a retail and leisure development.

Chapel Down Gin Works, Goods Way, Kings Cross, London, N1C.
The neon sign over the entrance declares 'Bar, Distillery, Restaurant'. The website is quite 'hip'. But I remember the humble beginnings of the building which was a sales office for the nearby Gasholder Park residences.

The view, broadly east, along Regent's Canal below Coal Drop Yards at Kings Cross in the now N1C postcode. The Coal Office can be seen overlooking the canal and gives some relief from the shockingly dull modern buildings beyond.

Kings Cross Cameo - 13 April 2018

London's much changed stations are difficult places to photograph these days. Kings Cross viewed from any external vantage point is a jungle of overhead wires and other furniture not conducive to photography. My philosophy then is to get what one can and York Way provides some limited opportunities. Blue Class 67 67003 was, I presume, tug of the day. The colour makes a nice contrast with the Virgin Trains East Coast Class 43 power car.

The development of the Kings Cross area will incorporate some of the wonderful existing architecture. The Fish and Coal Offices on the Regent's Canal and Granary Square will become an HQ for the Jamie Oliver Group as described here - www.kingscross.co.uk/fish-coal-offices

The Filling Station (Mono) - 19 January 2015

The words 'Mobil Mart' can still be discerned on this soon to disappear feature of Goods Way, Kings Cross. The historic branding is itself of interest because the Mobil petrol stations were bought by BP as long ago as 2000 during changes in the oil industry and this site closed as a BP. Following its history as an actual filling station, the site was used for so-called pop-up restaurants and events. Now, I believe, it is to disappear in the Kings Cross redevelopment. This view was made possible by the very welcome existence of a viewing platform at the top of the new King's Boulevard which, in turn, is next to a temporary theatre housing the latest London performances of 'The Railway Children'.
