HMS Alliance Reopening - 3 April 2014

04 Apr 2014 128
The long and worthwhile refurbishment of HMS Alliance at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport is complete. Knowing this, we visited today but were surprised to find that this was the day of the official reopening and invited guests were dispersing before the public opening time of 1400. Confetti lay about the place and the boat looked fine in some hazy but bright Spring light. 200_P1020011

Confetti lay about the place and the boat looked fine in some hazy but bright Spring light. One of the issues that had led to the substantial deterioration in the condition of Alliance was that it rested near, and often in, water as shown in this September 2010 photograph from a similar viewpoint. The refurbished boat has been placed above a gravel bed. Considerable damage had also been caused by pigeons and a massive quantity of their corrosive 'contributions' has been removed. 200_P1020026

The long and worthwhile refurbishment of HMS Alliance at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport is complete and today was the day of the official reopening The boat looked fine in some hazy but bright Spring light. The interior has received plenty of attention and has been dressed to show what it would have been like in service. A freeflow entrance system will now operate during busy periods with the museum's excellent guides taking visitors through at quieter times. These are the forward torpedo tubes. 200_P1020027
