HMS Alliance Reopening - 3 April 2014

04 Apr 2014 127
The long and worthwhile refurbishment of HMS Alliance at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport is complete. Knowing this, we visited today but were surprised to find that this was the day of the official reopening and invited guests were dispersing before the public opening time of 1400. Confetti lay about the place and the boat looked fine in some hazy but bright Spring light. 200_P1020011

Confetti lay about the place and the boat looked fine in some hazy but bright Spring light. One of the issues that had led to the substantial deterioration in the condition of Alliance was that it rested near, and often in, water as shown in this September 2010 photograph from a similar viewpoint. The refurbished boat has been placed above a gravel bed. Considerable damage had also been caused by pigeons and a massive quantity of their corrosive 'contributions' has been removed. 200_P1020026

HMS Affray Memorial - 24 September 2013

24 Sep 2013 317
HMS Affray, a British Amphion-class submarine was the last Royal Navy submarine to be lost at sea, on 16 April 1951, with the loss of 75 lives. My attention was drawn to the existence of this memorial, dedicated only on 16 April 2013, by a less distinct photograph from another Flickr member. It is on the Gosport waterfront very close to the epicentre of UK submarine history and I hope my image helps to commemorate those lost in this tragedy. X20_DSCF2261C
