Millennium Timespace (1) - 24 September 2013

One's local area is often the least explored, an omission of which I am acutely aware but only infrequently correct. Today, I had the joy of a brief ramble in Gosport and came across for the first time the oddly conceived Millennium Timespace, an installation built around a not especially attractive sundial. It might be unkind to suggest that the rather dull monument reflects its equally drab surroundings as, arguably, shown in this image but these are my honest observations of the town. X20_DSCF2264

This closer view highlights the distinctive but not easily explained portico entrance to the sundial as well as the visual austerity of the block behind. The plaque which can be seen to the right of the entrance is shown more clearly in my next picture and marks the placing of a time capsule commemorating the 800th anniversary of the founding of Gosport. This plaque is to the right of the portico entrance to the sundial shown in my previous picture and marks the placing of a time capsule commemorating the 800th anniversary of the founding of Gosport. I am instinctively wary of commemorations of events long ago because the change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar makes it hard if not impossible to be accurate. X20_DSCF2266C

Today, I had the joy of a brief ramble in Gosport and came across for the first time the oddly conceived Millennium Timespace, an installation built around a not especially attractive sundial. It might be unkind to suggest that the rather dull monument disturbingly reflects its equally drab surroundings as, arguably, shown in this image but these are my honest observations of the town. I hope this composition salvages something vaguely artistic from the urban darkness. X20_DSCF2269
