Classic Air Force (27) - 14 September 2013

16 Sep 2013 211
The Classic Air Force, housed in the former Nimrod hangar at Newquay Airport (St Mawgan) preserves and, in some cases, flies numerous aircraft many of which were previously owned by Air Atlantique and displayed at Airbase Coventry. A recent arrival at CAF is VC10 ZA148. Although de-engined it presumably faces a brighter future than those which went to Bruntingthorpe. TZ30_P1010232C

I don't know if it is possible to have many favourites but the Meteor is amongst mine. In the foreground is NF11 WM167/GLOSM and behind, T7 WA591. X20_DSCF2218

This, I thought, was a nice composition of three tails, Jet Provost XM424, Meteor WA591 and Vampire XJ771. X20_DSCF2214

The beautiful Vampire XJ771 was awkwardly positioned for a full shot so, this shot will serve for today. It is flown with Meteor WM167 as part of the Heritage Pair. X20_DSCF2211

Even in the most excellent museums, the barriers can be very annoying but, I suppose they are necessary to keep at bay the unruly and the careless especially when, as here, an exhibit is in flying condition. This is an ex-Swiss Air Force Venom (J-1614) now WK436. X20_DSCF2205

This is today's 'fail'. After tens of thousands of photographs I still end up with the occasional unintended crop. The other crops today (with one, more tolerable, exception) were intentional. However, I thought Chipmunk G-APLO, last photographed at Coventry, worthy of inclusion even in a less than complete frame. X20_DSCF2204

One thing which underlines the quality of preservation at CAF (and elsewhere) and the effort which goes in to it, is when you learn the age of the aircraft. Auster WE569 was built in 1950. There is some work to be done on Varsity WJ945/G-BEDV but CAF is the kind of place where it will get the attention it needs. Although I am no longer young, Varsities were already being stored or scrapped when I started seriously visiting airfields. X20_DSCF2200

Hunter WB188 was looking very well on this visit. On the occasion of my September 2011 visit to Coventry it was the most remote of the exhibits. X20_DSCF2197
