My latest series, from Hayling Island, celebrates the work of volunteers and contractors on the Hayling Seaside Railway in producing an attractive new facility at Eastoke Corner, combining the station platform and workshop. A move from Beachlands became necessary when the lease there expired. Even on a grey April day, the new building, prominently featuring thoughtfully chosen wood, looked very smart and a testament to the efforts of all those who contributed. I walked slowly clockwise round the site and make no apology for posting as many as thirteen pictures.

The Hayling Billy Lament (3) - 3 November 2013
03 Nov 2013 |
|
The weekend of 2 & 3 November 2013 saw the 50th anniversary of the closure of the Hayling Island branch (which also took place on a weekend). Events to mark this anniversary had fallen rather flat with the failure to bring a Terrier to the mainland from the Isle of Wight and the late cancellation of the running of two locomotives at the K&ESR but the Hayling Seaside Railway fulfilled its plans to run summer guest 'Wendy' on its weekend trains. My photographs were taken at Eastoke Corner and clearly show her 'The Hayling Billy Lament' headboard. In this view, 'Wendy' departs with the 1120 to Beachlands.

Wendy is a 2' gauge 0-4-0ST Quarry Bagnall owned by the Hampshire Narrow Gauge Railway Trust (HNGRT) and is on loan to the Hayling Seaside Railway to help them with celebrations of their 10th anniversary and to take part in events marking the 50th anniversary of the closure of the Havant - Hayling Island branch. When I arrived at Beachlands on this occasion, Wendy was being steamed for operation but, unfortunately, it was later announced on Facebook that she was unwell and a diesel service continued. With Hayling reasonably busy on a bank holiday Monday, an extra train ran at 1015. Thank you to the staff of the Hayling Seaside Railway for making me welcome.
