Masonic Hotel (1) - 26 February 2015

As highlighted in my earlier commentary, Napier, on New Zealand's North Island is the home of some delightful architecture. As one stands and mentally sweeps away the trappings of the modern era, the Art Deco highlights of the town transport one back to a different era. None is more powerfully elegant than the Masonic Hotel. It was built in its present form in 1932 as a defiant Napier resurrected itself from the rubble of the previous year's earthquake. The earlier building had been consumed in one of the many fires which raged in the aftermath of that catastrophe. 200_2_P1030740

Farmers' Co-op - 26 February 2015

Given the scale of destruction in the 1931 earthquake, it is all the more pleasing to find examples of Napier's surviving and restored art deco architecture. Although now rather diminished by the partially abandoned Mid City Plaza, the building bearing the inscription 'The Hawke's Bay Farmers' Co-operative Association' still brings pleasure to the eye and heart in 2015. 200_2_P1030695

The Gillette Building - 30 December 2014

31 Dec 2014 151
Standing at Gillette Corner at the junction of the A4 Great West Road and Syon Lane in Brentford is the fabulous 1937 Sir Banister Fletcher designed Gillette Building which was vacated by the eponymous company only in 2006. I can not tell you what joy this Grade II listed Art Deco building brings to my heart. I hope that proposed development does not destroy any of its character. 200_2_P1020206C

Eastern Columbia Building - 20 November 2013

The Art Deco Eastern Columbia Building is considered (with some justification) to be amongst Los Angeles' most beautiful. Built in 1930, in only 9 months, it was the HQ for two clothing stores. It is now a condominium building developed initially in 2006. P1190384
