Whilst some aspire to re-open the entire route of the former Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway, I feel that the station restorations are more realistic. There are key projects at various points of the line and, of those, Shillingstone is perhaps the best known. A remarkable amount of work has been done by a limited number of volunteers and the station garden is particularly attractive. This is a view of the up (northbound) platform towards Sturminster Newton [qv] with the main station building and Mk1 buffet coach.

Standing as sentinel on the painstakingly restored station, a Kubota mini-excavator symbolises the efforts of the volunteers whose acheivements are evident in this picture.
