As noted in the text of my earlier photograph, this Hy-rail equipped International DuraStar of DBi Services stopped a westbound run at Indio for replenishment of what I assume to be weedkiller. The vehicle is used for vegetation management and is seen just after completion of the refill. The operator is out of sight, climbing down at the rear. As I left the area, the vehicle had left the rails (intentionally) and was facing east. 200_2_P1070762

It seemed particularly topical in this RHTT season to capture this sight just to the south of Indio, CA. Strictly speaking, the role of this vehicle is 'vegetation management', one of many services provided by DBi Services. Leaf fall and adhesion are not problems in this part of the world. This Hy-rail equipped vehicle is an International DuraStar and the spray can just be seen in the picture. It had passed under Dillon Road and was following the route along Highway 111. In the event, it stopped for replenishment at the Indio Union Pacific depot where I took more photographs [qv]. 200_2_P1070748

If you have not seen a double-stack train in motion and you have any interest in North American railways, then you have a treat in store for your first time. If you have not seen such a train at speed then I suggest you book your plane ticket now. I have frequently seen these formations further west in the Coachella Valley and beyond (in particular between Cabazon and Palm Springs) where they are usually moving much more slowly or even stationary at signal checks. On a visit to Indio, CA I was photographing stationary stock when this eastbound train, led by Union Pacific GE ES44AC 7397, approached at considerable speed. You can only just see the beginning of the extremely long consist but I was able to release the shutter just as 7397 was framed by an overbridge. It was a long but happy wait for the next photograph (in this photostream) which could hardly be more different and still rail-related. 200_2_P1070756
