Palmerston House - 5 August 2013

Southampton, although relatively prosperous, has by no means escaped the depredations of recession. In a city widely damaged in WWII and consequently extensively rebuilt, even its newer buildings have not all survived well. I think it is fair to say that, in the protracted period of construction which was common to many towns and cities, Southampton was, to some extent, 'uglified'. Retail units which were less than attractive from the outset, now blight the city in their abandonment. Here, beneath Palmerston House [Queensway/Canal Walk], a crudely boarded former watchmaker and jeweller's premises is, mercifully, away from the tourist trail. TZ30_P1010018
