Zany Zebras is a large scale public art event organised by Marwell Zoo and held in and around Southampton from 16 July to 25 September 2016. I have already brought 'Before Zany Zebras' and 'Zany Zebras On Parade' to this site and my extensive coverage of the event continues now with pictures from the main event. My work aims to celebrate the hard work and talent of the artists, schools, colleges and other bodies who created the zebras as well as raising awareness of the event. To achieve this I shall post full figure shots, portraits, some shots which are slightly zany in their own right and some pictures of the zebras in the city landscape. The event did experience negativity from a tiny majority. Poster boy Gilbert was stolen in May (and later returned) and a couple of the zebras were vandalised. This shot records the temporary consequences of one of the acts of vandalism. Zebra Name - Chris Cross (Trail Map no. 24) Location - Above Bar Sponsor - NatWest Artist - Will Rosie 200_2_P1110796

Before Zany Zebras_018 - 4 April 2016

Following the success of the public art event Go! Rhinos in the summer of 2013, Marwell Zoo brought Zany Zebras to Southampton in 2016. In preparation for the event, some of the chosen artists decorated their zebras in a shop in the Marlands Shopping Centre in Southampton. It was possible to view the sculptures closely and to chat to the artists. On my second visit, I enjoyed privileged access to the zebras and to the artists, four of whom kindly spent time chatting. It was very stimulating being with such talented and charming people. This picture shows Will Rosie's second zebra (closer to the camera) and one of two by Jenny Leonard. 200_2_P1090637

The artist Will Rosie was involved with Go! Rhinos for which he produced the striking Enrhinomental . He is engaged to decorate two or maybe three zebras and is seen here working on the first with his wife and other helpers. In the background is the zebra by Sarah Rosie, his daughter. 200_2_P1090206

Go! Rhinos is an exciting public art event in Southampton held 13 July - 22 September 2013. The trail requires a little effort to walk but I think it is worth it. I am posting a series of pictures which will show some portraits and some with the figures in the wider context of a very photogenic city.
