Historic Halifax - 16 July 2015

This photograph is more symbolic than informative without the explanation which follows. To walk around near the present day Halifax station is to walk in a wonderland of railway history. A look at a satellite image centred on the station will give you some idea why. An area extending between two car parks and containing the Eureka! (sic) museum and the bridge approach to the station forecourt was obviously once heavily laid with track. Central to the area is the former station building also belonging to Eureka! The Victorian brickwork under the bridge is just superb. For the 'lost railway' enthusiast this is worth 15-30 mins of wandering to take in the atmosphere. 200_2_P1060006

This impressive looking structure is, in fact, made largely of wood and it is unfortunate that it was undergoing refurbishment at the time of my visit. The history of the arch and the tracks beneath is uncertain except that loading used to take place from this part of Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. In recent years the arch has been vandalised and set on fire but it survives still. In this view it frames the SS Jeremiah O'Brien seen more closely in this image. P1190116
