Braemar at St. John's - 16 March 2019

This is my favourite shot from my latest visit to Antigua. SOOC except for a crop, the light was fading fast as Viking Sea sailed leaving Fred Olsen Braemar at St. John's, from where she would sail to Tortola and, ultimately, Southampton.

My cruise ship photography will be tedious to some but is aimed, as are many of my other pictures, at enthusiasts on a certain subject. Different angles can assist, for example, record keeping and modelling. So, my Braemar series from Antigua continues with three more arrival shots in which the ship is manoeuvring to approach the quay stern first. Followers will recall that Norwegian Gem [qv] performed a similar manoeuvre at Castries although that was executed outside what one might regard as the harbour entrance. Braemar turned closer to the piers and took quite some time before coming alongside.

The intense midday light lends to this picture an almost HDR effect but I have not altered the contrast or brightness.

Fred Olsen Braemar was the fourth cruise ship to arrive St. John's on this day and the second to have been with Viking Sea at Bridgetown two days earlier. Arriving only at lunchtime, Braemar would depart for Tortola on a continuing voyage to Southampton to commence her European itineraries.

She is seen here accompanied by the tug 'Istria'. Arriving only at lunchtime, Braemar would depart for Tortola on a continuing voyage to Southampton to commence her European itineraries.

Bank closures are, I believe, worldwide and here was another example in St. John's, Antigua. The building of this ECAB (Eastern Caribbean Amalagmated Bank) branch seemed substantial and in good order but notices around the outside, of which three can be seen in the picture, report the closure, nearly three years ago, of this High Street branch and the night safe (far left) although machine withdrawals could still be made.

This picture of a Toyota bB in St. John's, Antigua was taken to provide a little peer group humour on Facebook relating to a mutual friend but also serves as an addition to my 'Motor Vehicles' album in its own right.

Viking Sea looking particularly splendid at St. John's Antigua. The second of four ships visiting St. John's this day, she had arrived from Roseau and would depart for Philipsburg.

Although 35 years old, Marella Celebration looked quite fine at St. John's, Antigua. She had arrived from Bridgetown and would call next at Road Town, Tortola.

Just a sign in St. John's but also another great port of call on a cruise itinerary.

Holland America Rotterdam at St. John's - 16 March…

Holland America Rotterdam had arrived at St. John's, Antigua earlier than Viking Sea. The port is a little difficult for photographs so my continuing ambition of photographing every cruise ship everywhere required some compromise. Rotterdam had arrived from Charlotte Amalie and would depart for Castries on a round-trip itinerary from Tampa.

Viking Sea had already reached St. John's, Antigua when Marella Celebration, a companion at Bridgetown two days earlier, renewed the acquaintance during one of her continuing Caribbean itineraries.

Sailing Yacht A (1) - 16 March 2019

The approach to St. John's, Antigua brought the surprising and initially puzzling sight of what I later discovered to be the remarkable Sailing Yacht A. There is some debate in the marine world as to whether she is, indeed, any kind of sailing yacht given her very substantial size and the mechanical system used to deploy the 'sails'. Nevertheless, she is so named and thus distinguished from the Motor Yacht A owned by the same person. The morning light made more striking the unexpected sight and I could not choose between the two photographs I have posted.
Geotagging approximate.
