The Old Bank Hotel - 15 October 2017

21 Oct 2017 143
The buildings of the Old Bank Hotel, 92-94 High Street, Oxford have a long and varied history but part did, indeed, at one time accommodate a bank started by a drapery business as early as 1775. In more recent times, the property was the Oxford branch of Barclays, closing in 1998. www.oldbank-hotel.co.uk/hotel/history/ Photograph by John Oram Photoshop (perspective straightening) by Gregory Halse X20_DSCF3013E_PS

Branch Opening - 15 October 2017

21 Oct 2017 110
The opening of a bank branch is an unusual sight these days so I was easily motivated to take this photograph in Cornmarket Street, Oxford on a Sunday evening. Although the notice of opening hours was in place this branch would not be opening on the Monday morning. Evidence of the preparations for the opening is visible in the lit interior. The ATMs have notices reading 'Out of Order' and, on the left, a board marks the future location of the night safe. I assume the business will move from the nearby 32 Cornmarket Street. This property has for a while been the subject of a notice of change of use from Use Class A1 (Shop) to Use Class A2 (Financial Services). TZ30_P1040772E

Oxford Castle - 14 October 2017

17 Oct 2017 136
St George's Tower is the most significant remaining part of the early Oxford Castle. The castle itself was largely destroyed in the Civil War and the remaining buildings became a prison and, with development, an hotel. The remains today are surrounded by modern development which is not especially attractive. 200_3_P1030483R

The Human Touch (5) - 14 October 2017

16 Oct 2017 133
My series 'The Human Touch' continues to provide a visual commentary on how we treat our world with seeming disregard for the planet and the comfort of its inhabitants. This is the very modest Castle Mill Stream in Oxford seen from Hythe Bridge - imagine the state of the ocean. 200_3_P1030467E

My series 'The Human Touch' continues to provide a visual commentary on how we treat our world with seeming disregard for the planet and the comfort of its inhabitants. The telephone box is in Keble Road, Oxford but it could be anywhere. And I though only mobile phones had chips. 200_3_P1030531E
