Ladymead Fountain - 22 August 2014

24 Aug 2014 221
The beautiful Ladymead Fountain (1860) encapsulates everything which I like about Bath and Walcot Street in particular. It was renovated in 2006 but shows some signs of neglect. The original included the drinking fountain and horse trough. The bench was added in 2003. I wanted to photograph this the previous day but rubbish awaiting collection did not enhance the composition. My persistence was rewarded early in the morning. TZ30_P1020299

Architecture in Bath (5) - 21 August 2014

The Corn Market in Walcot Street, Bath is another striking building but marred by the completely unsympathetic extension onto Beehive Yard housing a small office. 200_P1050343

For all the pleasure I get from finding interesting buildings, I get more pleasure and some frustration when trying to find out more about what I have seen. This building in James Street West, Bath is absolutely fascinating and was the old Labour Exchange. Until recently, it housed two charities, The Woodworks and The Genesis Trust. The building shows extensive shrapnel damage, visible in this photograph and provided an interesting resonance with two others I have seen this year in Rouen and Jerusalem. 200_P1050323

Although much modified since its original use, the features of the upper part of The Tramshed in Beehive Yard, Bath are still recognisable. The former tramshed now houses the eponymous restaurant and residential accommodation. 200_P1050348

The Bath Brew House (previously The Metropolitan) on James Street West is one of a chain of three (at the time of writing) and has a micro brewery. However, it was the architecture which caught my eye. The building had a long history as the Midland Hotel, the original association being, apparently, with the Midland Railway at the nearby Bath Green Park station [qv]. 200_P1050320

When architecture and history meet, my heart soars. Bath is a city with riches in both and the Christadelphian Hall in New King Street is one example. The building dates from 1880 although the Christadelphian association is more recent. The wonderful advertisements on the side of the building recall the Marvel Cycle Co. about which I have, so far, discovered nothing. 200_P1050296

Christmas Every Day - 27 June 2013

30 Jun 2013 133
For many reasons, I am not a fan of Christmas so, when I came upon this shop in Cheap Street, Bath, I needed to photograph it both as part of my aversion therapy and to capture the incongruity of the sight on a warm, sunny day. X20_DSCF1303
