A winding journey to a panoramic viewpoint above Rouen was well worthwhile. This view features Rouen cathedral and Église Saint-Maclou. I think a modern view made possible by the wonders of digital photography compares favourably with 'Vue générale de Rouen' by Claude Monet (1892). There is a depiction of that work on a placard at the viewpoint and I think it is one of his worst. I like impressionism but there is a point at which the style, taken too far, conveys much less than it intends. 200_P1020524

An office building in Rue du Donjon, Rouen next to the Joan of Arc Tower (see previous photograph) bears this important plaque marking the history of an earlier occupant of the site, a Gestapo building destroyed on 19 April 1944. TZ30_P1020058

The Joan of Arc Tower (or dungeon), La Tour Jeanne d'Arc, in Rue du Donjon and seen here in the background, is the last remaining part of the former Bouvreuil (or Rouen) Castle. The office building in the centre of the photograph occupies the site of a wartime Gestapo building, destroyed on 19 April 1944 and the history is commemorated by a plaque (next photograph) on the part of the building closest to the tower. There is so much in this picture not least of all the fact that the ass is wearing roller skates. That is, I think, what really caught my eye. Anyway, it bears the legend 'Savons au lait d'ânesse' which means 'asses milk soaps'. The advertising ass is outside Des Savons et Des Bulles (which is like a Body Shop or Lush) in Rue Saint Lô, Rouen. 200_P1020505
