The Otto Wagner architecture designed for the erstwhile Stadtbahn happily survives in many places and is at its most pleasing at the wonderful Stadtpark station on line U4 of the U-Bahn. I had attempted some night shots which turned out somewhere between disappointing and embarrassing so I was pleased to capture this daytime shot between trains when the entrance was briefly deserted. I previously described the Stadtbahn architecture as 'poised delicately between ornate and simple' and I think this is clearly exemplified here. 200_3_P1020787CE

One of the greatest joys of my most recent visit to Vienna was to discover and learn more about the works of Otto Wagner. Prominent amongst these were the stations of the Stadtbahn which are very beautiful, poised delicately as they are between the ornate and the simple. The Stadtbahn was absorbed into the U-Bahn and, in parts, the S-Bahn but many of the station buildings survive although only Stadtpark is near-original at platform level. This is Hietzing station which is now on U-Bahn line U4. 200_3_P1020644R
