Harmony of the Seas - 26 May 2016

Bright, hazy weather well into the evening made for challenging conditions as I used my humble bridge camera at its limits after a patient wait for Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas to leave Southampton Water and make her way past the Isle of Wight. I took the unusual step of shooting in HDR mode and additionally processing with a little HDR to get some sort of contrast.
Harmony of the Seas was under way to Cherbourg on the second of two short cruises undertaken before a final departure (on 29 May) to her summer home port of Barcelona.

Tesla Model S - 14 April 2016

I am by no means a petrolhead (if that is not an inappropriate term for this car) but the Tesla Model S is a real head-turner. This P85 was at San Carlos Airport, California and I have used a little HDR to try to give to the picture some of the impact the real thing had on me.

Snail Shadow (Abstract) - 25 July 2015
25 Jul 2015 |
|
Last evening, heavy rain brought the snails out on the march, setting off in all directions. I rather like snails; they seem to like walls. Today, it was time for me to play. I loved the pattern of the shell, the texture of the wall and the shadow. Before editing, the shadow, caused mainly by me and my camera, seemed to emanate inkily from the shell itself.

Liverpool Lime Street (3) [HDR version] - 13 July…

Liverpool Lime Street station. Hand-held night shot with a little HDR processing. I wanted to experiment with a method I do not really favour to see if I could improve the apparent sharpness of my night shots. Using HDR with a light touch does seem to work when compared to the original version .

Truro Cathedral by Night - 8 July 2015
09 Jul 2015 |
|
I took this photograph of Truro Cathedral to practice my night photography and have processed it with just a little HDR. It is taken from more or less the same POV as my daytime shot of 13 April 2014 with which you may wish to compare.
Truro Cathedral is distinctive for being one of only three cathedrals in the UK with three spires. It is also of very recent construction (1880-1910) and was the first cathedral to be built on a new site in England since Salisbury in 1220.

This absolutely beautiful Volkswagen Beetle KRY724, on loan from the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu, featured in the British Museum's exhibition 'Germany - memories of a nation' from 16 October 2014. The vehicle was already on display on 10 October. Such was the joy in my heart, I have made a rare excursion into HDR.

Tornado XX947 at Transair, Shoreham (3) - 1 July 2…

Flying the Flag
The presence at Shoreham of Tornado XX947 will not be news to many enthusiasts but it was a pleasant surprise for me because I have not been down to the end of the airfield road in many years (if ever). The aircraft is gate guardian for flight equipment company Transair who have an excellent brief history of XX947 (P03) online.

Jasmine Touch - 10 June 2014

Out of nowhere, lighting I liked a lot, an ordinary household product. A rare excursion into HDR and then a slight tweak back down again.

My New Friend - 28 May 2013
29 May 2013 |

First time in many years with KLM today as loyalty to BA is being stretched a bit thin. Excellent service, on time performance and remarkable breakfast. Dank U Wel, KLM. This photograph is notable in that I used HDR for, I think, the first time, to combat the difficult lighting in the aircraft cabin. Here, the effect is put to good use rather than producing the much more familiar, strikingly unnatural images we see often. I read articles saying that HDR is used for a more realistic reproduction of what was seen. Really?
