To see pillar boxes side by side is not altogether common especially in our more rural towns so I found these, in Hythe, Hampshire, to be of special interest. Next to the E II R example stands another from the reign of Her Majesty's father, King George VI. There are detailed design differences including the aperture and it is of note that 'Post Office' has changed to 'Royal Mail' by the time of the casting of the more recent box. The bases reveal that the G VI R box was cast by McDowall, Steven & Co. Ltd. of London & Falkirk and the E II R by Machan Eng(ineering) of Scotland (Falkirk). TZ70_P1000260CE

Post boxes feature very seldom in my photostream but the sheer ugliness of this pair made them worth recording. Standing at the corner of Friar Lane and Wycliffe Street in Leicester, it is not clear why two boxes should be needed in this relatively quiet location. 200_P1040616
