A nice view at Didcot Railway Centre shows (l-r) the former 08604 now 604 'Phantom', Class 14 0-6-0 D9516 and GWR 7800 Class no. 7808 'Cookham Manor'. The eagle-eyed will notice that there is someone in the inspection pit, a photographer doing what I wish I had had the imagination to do. I was already leaving when I saw this but regretted not having been a bit more creative myself. 200_3_P1120448E

For someone who was not brought up with steam by virtue of geography rather than my date of birth, diesel preservation is of great interest. The standard of preservation on the West Somerset Railway is very high and is exemplified here, at Williton, by Class 33 D6575, Class 47 D1661 'North Star', Western Class D1010 'Western Fusilier' and (right) Class 14 D9526. 200_2_P1100930

Class 14 locomotive D9553 arrived at Sharpness, Vale of Berkeley Railway in January 2016. This class has been unusually fortunate in preservation with as many as 19 surviving of the 56 built. 200_2_P1080840C
