The Odd Couple - 24 April 2021

25 Apr 2021 1 71
With an old chimney making a pleasing distraction from the fence, a view across Eastleigh reveals and odd pair, apparently coupled. On the left is former Gatwick Express luggage van GLV 68505 now a de-icing van with Network Rail and, on the right, Class 117 DMS 977988 (formerly 51413) and used with a DMBS by Chiltern on 'leaf busting' duties. I am grateful to my friend David Hann for much of the detailed information. 200_4_P1010622E

The Eastleigh of Today - 2 April 2021

03 Apr 2021 63
One never really knows what a visit to Eastleigh will bring and it is by no means always possible to take even a half decent photograph. The intrusion of the unwelcome 2020 fence makes this picture no more than half decent. There is an enormous amount of stock there and in great variety but it can look very jumbled with the one thing one really wanted to see, in this case Class 484, well hidden away or even absent. Nevertheless, much though I dislike the Network Rail yellow on anything, I really do like Class 313. That Class 08 shunter 08567, still in EWS colour is next to it, pretty much sums up the Eastleigh of today. 200_4_P1010525C

313121 at Eastleigh - 22 February 2020

Network Rail Class 313 test train 313121 at Eastleigh. Class 313 has always been one of my favourites and I was pleased to see this unit in particular. The pile of rubble in the foreground is significant. The recent demolition of the training school has created a new sight line and, with the gate house gone, one can, for the time being, approach gate 2 more closely. TZ70_P1010964CE

73951 at Eastleigh - 26 October 2015

As a Portsmouth boy, I have a fondness for the 50 year old Class 73. Although some are in preservation, many are still going strong in several different roles. Much modified Network Rail 73951, a so-called Ultra 73 (and formerly 73104 and E6010) is seen here at Eastleigh. 200_2_P1070358

Class 57 at Eastleigh (3) - 24 March 2014

In the much depleted locomotive scene of today, the many locomotives which can be seen at Eastleigh are a welcome sight. Amongst those present today were Network Rail Class 57 57310 and Direct Rail Services 57010. 200_P1010917

This view of Eastleigh featuring QSA Translator Coach T2/ADB975875 gives, on closer examination, a flavour of the very varied scene at this site as the 21st century progresses. In addition to two QSAs, withdrawn emus, LUL stock and active Network Rail Class 57 locomotives can be seen. 200_P1000171

Ruston Shunter at Eastleigh - 24 October 2013

25 Oct 2013 1 162
In its short time at Eastleigh this ex-Army Ruston has appeared in various guises and with varying numbers of side panels. Formerly MoD 428 (01508), the shunter carried no markings on this occasion but has been painted in Arlington green to match the translator coaches. It was at work during my visit and I thought it worth an obstructed shot. In the background is Network Rail Class 57 57303. P1180975

Around Eastleigh (1) - 25 August 2013

25 Aug 2013 2 161
Eastleigh is a place I can reach easily at short notice and I am determined to record periodically the place and its visitors in the early 21st century. Equipment and colour schemes come and go and, one day, my photographs, amongst thousands of others, might be a valuable source of reference. In this opening shot of today's series, Network Rail Class 57 57306 was one of at least five examples around Eastleigh on the bank holiday weekend. Here it stands next to a car of the doomed Class 508 units now being scrapped at the site. P1180816C

Equipment and colour schemes come and go and, one day, my photographs, amongst thousands of others, might be a valuable source of reference. For this shot of Network Rail generator coach 6260, I followed in the footsteps (or, perhaps, tyre tracks) of a Flickr friend who photographed the same vehicle on 5 August 2013. P1180826
