The Odd Couple - 24 April 2021

25 Apr 2021 1 71
With an old chimney making a pleasing distraction from the fence, a view across Eastleigh reveals and odd pair, apparently coupled. On the left is former Gatwick Express luggage van GLV 68505 now a de-icing van with Network Rail and, on the right, Class 117 DMS 977988 (formerly 51413) and used with a DMBS by Chiltern on 'leaf busting' duties. I am grateful to my friend David Hann for much of the detailed information. 200_4_P1010622E

As Fate Decrees (1) - 25 March 2018

On 12 February 2018 I photographed a sad looking Class 117 Pressed Steel DMBS W51346 at Eastleigh which had been stripped for parts. Today, on my latest visit, it was joined by a car believed to be Class 121 W55028 which has fared much better and, presumably, continues in preservation. 200_3_P1050181

W51346 at Eastleigh (2M) - 12 February 2018

Cab end of Class 117 Pressed Steel DMBS W51346 at Eastleigh where it has been used as a spares donor for the Swanage Railway Class 117 unit. My records show that I saw 51346 in service around 50 years ago although I do not have an exact date. The Pressed Steel units were, for a while, my favourites as they were relatively easy to see at a time when my movements were restricted by my young age and lack of money. 200_3_P1040401EM

Faded DMU Carriage at Eastleigh - 26 April 2015

27 Apr 2015 259
I very much loved the dmus known today in preservation as 'heritage' but once an everyday sight on our railways. Although I never liked the Network SouthEast colours, it was sad to see this MBS in this condition at Eastleigh. This is believed to be Class 117 Pressed Steel 51356. It was photographed by David Hann in much better condition during February 2015. 200_2_P1040487
