Looking at my various reference books, I can say with some confidence that DTC 76487 from Class 423 (4-VEP) unit 3079 was withdrawn by the time I photographed it at Fratton. The site itself was contracting as evidenced by the signs of lifted track in the foreground. The Fratton of today (April 2020) is very much reduced from the sprawling site in the early 1980s and before. Much of the wider site now has commercial property on it. 880527_010588E

4-VEP Memories A short trip from Vauxhall to Clapham Junction was intended to revive old memories and did so in an unexpected way with the sight of the beautiful 4-VEP (Class 423) 3417. If you overlook the modern vehicles in the background, this could almost be a much older photograph. Originally 7717, this unit was numbered 3017 and, subsequently, 3417 in successive modifications. It now runs in preservation as hauled stock. (I remember 4-VEPs being delivered new). TZ30_P1010279M

As the evening light fall across Clapham Junction, the front end of the beautiful 4-VEP 3417 contrasts with that of the more recent Class 458 Juniper 8019. Most of my photographs today were taken across the sun and through the windows of the station footbridge but this had the advantage of being in the open air with the remarkable lens of my TZ30.
