By July 1987, Sprinters and Pacers were already a significant presence in the north west but one could still see first generation dmus, This Birmingham RC&W Class 104 unit at Manchester Victoria was formed of DMB 53478 (leading) + DM 53530. 871122A_090787E

My records reveal that on 7 May 1986 I made a day trip to Manchester (from London) and, on a whirlwind tour, took in Manchester Piccadilly, Rose Hill Marple, Stockport and Manchester Victoria. At that time the Pacers were barely a year old and the transition from first generation dmus was under way. Looking back (from April 2020), I was fortunate to capture 142042 at Manchester Victoria alongside a Birmingham RC&W Class 104 unit with DMB 53460 leading. 860635_070586E
